Seems like coffee steak rubs are the new trendy thing as people constantly invent more ways to incorporate coffee, especially Kona coffee into delicious recipes. The following recipe is for a Kona coffee crusted sirloin steak, with the Kona coffee steak rub that goes on it and some steak butter to top it off.
Kona Coffee-Crusted Sirloin Steak
Serves 1
10 oz. sirloin steak
4 Tbsp. Kona Coffee Steak Rub (recipe follows)
1 Maui onion, sliced quarter-inch thick
1/2 C. vinegar, any type
1 C. flour
1 Tbsp. Steak Butter (recipe follows)
Prepare grill or broiler oven. Rub steak with Kona coffee steak rub. Place steak on grill and cook until desired temperature. Meanwhile, slice the onions and marinate in the vinegar for up to one hour. Then drain the vinegar and coat onions with the flour and fry until golden brown. Plate the steak with your choice of starch and top with one tablespoon of steak butter and fried onions.
Kona Coffee Steak Rub
Yield: 2 cups
1 C. Kona coffee, ground
1/2 C. Kosher salt
2 Tbsp. pepper
1/2 C. lemon pepper
1 Tbsp. garlic powder
4 Tbsp. onion powder
3/4 C. chili powder
Toast coffee in a saute pan and set aside. Meanwhile, mix the remaining ingredients. Add coffee when it has cooled, and store in an airtight container.
Steak Butter
Serves 10 to 12
1 Lb. salted butter
1/4 C. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. garlic powder
Soften butter and whip with remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl to combine.

Just found your site and this recipe today...
for the steak rub, I assume that the 1 C of Kona coffee listed in the ingredients is already roasted.
Then before mixing the ingredients together, you toast the coffee in a pan? How long should you "toast" the coffee?

We went on a cruise to Hawaii and stayed in the Kona district during our vacation and had the most amazing coffee crusted steak!
I still dream of that steak and almost went on the cruise again just to eat the food!
